Like Water for Chocolate – Laura Esquivel

A romantic tale of magical realism told in a monthly installment of recipes. Tita is the youngest daughter and thus destined to forever remain at home, catering to her mother’s every request. Being forbidden to marry does not stop Tita from falling in love with Pedro though. The pair’s passion for one another is evident to all, and Mama Elena is not happy about it. Pedro ends up marrying Tita’s sister, because it is the only way he can be close to the one he truly loves. In a string of curious and fantastical events, Tita and Pedro try to navigate their strange relationship. Tita finds happiness in the kitchen, where she pours all of her feelings into the wonderful meals she prepares from scratch… leaving those who eat her food experiencing the strong mixture of emotions that Tita herself feels.

Thoughts: I adored this book. It was recommended to me by a friend after I dramatically stated that the gravy I had been dipping my chicken tenders into had been poisoned by my tears. I laughed several times out loud at the ridiculous events taking place that were considered normal by the characters in the book, such as when one of Tita’s recipes causes a sexual frenzy to ripple throughout their town. It was a quick and fun read that I know I will think about often and read several more times in the years to come.
